I originally made this to help my friend Murph get going on the speed bag. I thought if it helped him get going then I should put it out there for others to try.

My approach on the speed bag is a little different from others. I’m not a fan of teaching the triple beat as the first thing to learn on the bag. Too many things going on at once for a beginner

If you’re a person like myself, I was pretty out of shape when I started learning how to speed bag. Which meant I couldn’t hold my arms up very long and I couldn’t speed bag at all. Every video I found on YouTube was the triple beat and teaching in a manner that every person watching it would have at least have some basic boxing skills.

Well, I didn’t, and I looked like a mentally challenged adult trying to learn how to speed bag AND....AND trying to get in shape. Lol this doesn’t even take into consideration that my timing is terrible, I can’t keep a beat to save my life. I battled through being terrible on the bag the slow and painful way. I eventually found guys like Zach Ruffo aka speed bag Skunk and Brad Bachmann that opened my eyes to another way to speed bag. As I learned this newly discovered badassness (new to me) I had a lot of friends asking me how they can do what I do. I spent a lot of time thinking what are the easiest movements and why. Simple conclusion, don’t start with the triple beat because that programs you to “hit” the ball. I don’t want you to hit the ball, I want you to control the ball.
The easiest movement I was able to repeat was the forward fist roll and linking because the ball bounces fewer times of the drum between punches. In turn making it easier to control, more fun to learn, and......it burns the hell out of your arms with relatively little movement so you’re able to gain skill and endurance all while having fun!!
