Russia's top decision makers reacted with displeasure on Wednesday (23/10) to US President Bill Clinton's call for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) expansion by the year 1999. Russian Foreign Minster Yevgeny Primakov reiterated that Russia opposes NATO's expansion into the former Warsaw Pact nations of central and eastern Europe.
