Lassen National Park is home to the most southerly of all the volcanoes situated on the North American section of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
Volcanoes line up and north to south through Western Canada and the USA states of Washington and Oregon ending with Lassen Peak in Northern California.
Our adventure includes:
Cold Boiling Lake
Trail length 1.5 miles out and back
Graded Easy.
The track is covered in volcanic dust
At first sight the rising bubbles give the impression of a boiling lake.
In fact the bubbles are cold carbon dioxide gas rising from the lake bed.
Lassen Peak
Lassen Peak is a 10,457 feet high volcano which last erupted in 1915.
It remains an active volcano and could threaten life at any time.
Bumpass Hell
Trail Length: 3 miles out and back
Graded: Easy
Bumpass Hell sits in a basin and is a large, colourful, smelly and dramatic concentration of geothermal features including mud pots, fumaroles and hot springs.
The temperature of the fumaroles reaches 160 degree Centigrade making them the hottest on the planet.
This geothermal area was discovered in the 1880s by a cowboy called Kendall Vanhook Bumpass.
He described it as being like "Hell on Earth",
During his exploration of the area his foot broke through the thin crust that was covering one of the boiling pools.
His leg was so severely burned it had to be amputated.
Good reason for keeping to the designated walkways.
Enjoy
