[ Ссылка ] “Turf Toe” is often used to describe any injury to the big toe joint. In fact, however, it is simply a sprain of the big toe joint – meaning that it is an injury to the ligaments that make up the big toe joint.
Turf toe is a common injury in football, soccer, lacrosse and ultimate – all sports that are played on turf (thus the name).
If the big toe joint is moved beyond its normal range of motion during activity, the ligaments surrounding the joint can be torn or stretched (a sprain of the joint). This injury often occurs during an abrupt change of direction in soccer or a tackle in football if the cleated shoe becomes too fixed to the ground.
Treatment of Turf Toe: If not treated properly turf toe can lead to prolonged pain and disability so o don’t try to treat joint injuries yourself at home.
X-rays will usually be taken to help rule-out a fracture or dislocation and advanced imaging studies such as bone scan, CT scan or MRI may be necessary in some cases. Once we have determined the nature and extent of the injury we will start treatment with a goal to ensure rapid healing of the big toe joint and as quick a return to activity as is possible.
Treatment of turf toe usually will involve immobilization in a walking boot for a period of time along with anti-inflammatory measures. To get you back to activity as soon as possible arch supports or orthotics can be used to decrease force on the big toe joint and help prevent turf toe in the future.
