When you go into a hospital for treatment it's sometimes difficult to know who exactly is treating you and what their level of expertise is.
One of the things you should know is the hierarchy of the doctors at the hospital.
A resident is a doctor who has completed four years of medical school who is now embarking on learning his specialty. That residency training can take anywhere from 3 years to 7 years depending on the specialty.
A fellow is a doctor who has completed his residency training and is now going to learn for another year or two in a sub-specialty.
An attending doctor is someone who has completed their training and is now working full time as a doctor who sees and treats patients either while employed by a hospital or as a private physician who has privileges to see and treat patients at the hospital.
