Mag Pack ► [ Ссылка ] In my last lesson, “Double-Triple Bass” in Drum Magazine's December 2016 issue, I introduced the concept of inserting a double bass three-stroke ruff into basic double bass sixteenth-note beats and patterns. Continuing that idea, we’ll deal with double-time double-bass grooves.
Start with a basic groove using your hands and right foot only. The right hand can play the ride cymbal or a second hi-hat (Ex. 1).
In Ex. 2, beat 3 in the second bar adds a note for the left foot, the second eighth-note in the triplet figure, turning beat 3 into a three-stroke ruff.
In Ex. 3, adding more notes with the left foot fills in the eighth-notes. Ex. 4 is the same as Ex. 3, but notice that the left foot plays the & of beat 4 in the second bar.
The groove shifts into double time in Ex. 5, going from eighth-notes to sixteenth-notes, with two three-stroke ruffs in the same measure.
Finally, the three-stroke ruffs can be played on every beat (Ex. 6). Try it out!
