How to apply your stain.
In this video, we’re going to show you the simple steps to a stain—with staying power.
Here are tools you’ll need:
A plastic drop cloth
Painter’s tape
A paint pad
A pole or handle
A stain brush
A paint pan
For your safety, always wear protective eyewear or a face shield, rubber gloves, and protective clothing and footwear when spraying.
AND choose one of Thompson WaterSeal’s Stains—which are available in Clear, Transparent, Semi-Transparent, and Solid. Each opacity level hides more of the wood grain, but provides more protection than the more transparent options.
So let’s begin.
If you have railings, you might want to start with them while you can still walk on your deck.
When you’re done, you can go to work on the main surface.
Dip the paint pad in the pan, and press it against the top of the pan to squeeze out excess stain. Then you can start applying the stain on just a few boards at a time. Try not to put it on too thick. A thin coat is all it needs.
If you work in small areas at a time, the leading edge of your stain stays wet and you can avoid lap marks when the it dries.
Make sure the stain is worked into the wood and feel free to touch up any spots you missed.
If your boards are further apart, you may need to use a brush to smooth out the stain that goes down the sides.
And if you have access to the underside of the deck boards, it’s a good idea to add a coat to that as well. The more coverage, the more protection.
With only one coat of Thompson’s WaterSeal Waterproofing Stain, your finish is, well, finished. However if you want more color, apply a second coat within 4 hours of the first.
