EURASIAN COOT with BABY CHICK
Alkmaar, Netherlands | Wild Animal Behaviour #13
Hello and welcome back to this spring video of Wild Animal Behaviour.
This is an Eurasian coot followed by her one day old chick.
There latin name is Fulica atra which means black coot.
Take a look at the big toes of the adult. The partial webbing in between makes them excellent swimmers.
Did you know that there is no
difference in appearance between male and female?
A couple build there nest near the waterside where the female can lay up to 10 eggs.
It takes about 22 days untill the chicks are hatched.
They are omnivore and will eat a variety of insects and plants.
Coots can be very hard to their own young.
They can bite young chicks that are begging for food and repeatedly do this until it stops begging and starves to death.
And if thats not enough, they are also food for a bird of prey or a big hungry pike.
In nature only the strongest will survive.
After 8 weeks the young chicks learn to fly and become independent.
