What Do We Think?
What a stunner! The colorshifter Cosmic Blue nitro finish bounds from a metallic blue to a majestic purple under the light. The neck is a 1-piece roasted AAAA-grade flame roasted maple neck. Very 3D and just like the Cosmic Blue finish, it dances under the light. But with the appropriate relic’ing applied by Shabat, you don’t have to feel bad playing this bad boy.
The Lollar HSS set consists of a Special S in neck and middle, and high wind Imperial humbucker in the bridge. Position 1 delivers the midrange punch and control you love in a bridge humbucker. It’s thick and rich but has plenty of clarity to handle your drop D riffs, and sings just as readily in the upper registers.
Position 2 dishes out some wonderful, souped-up Strat quack when you combine the full humbucker with the middle pickup. Engage the coil split on the humbucker (slug coil active) for those more traditional bridge and bridge/middle tones. As a bonus, you’ll get a slightly rounder top end out of that slug coil than you would out of a standard bridge pickup on an SSS, due to its increased distance from the bridge.
And of course, positions 3 through 5 are tried-and-true Strat all the way. The maple fretboard imparts a perfect transparency to the Lollar Special S pair. Big and bold, these pickups also track nicely with the volume knob to “clean up” your amp and give you a variety of flavors right at your fingertips.
The Gotoh 2-pivot trem is smooth to operate and provides excellent tuning stability that will encourage you to use it generously. The tremolo arm is precision threaded and fits snugly inside a bushing that removes the “play” in a traditional screw-in design. You’ll also find this design provides a larger range of “hold in place” than standard screw-in designs, so you can move the arm to the side if desired but won’t find yourself chasing it down after each use.
