Ladies and gentlemen, we present to you, the VERY FIRST build that was done in the new shop here in Roanoke, VA. Tay's friend Michael of Old Hickory and Co Woodworks was in dire need of a chimney cap for his house (as dire a need as you can be in for a chimney cap) and Tay moved some things around to make it happen for him. With barely an outlet to plug in a welder and a makeshift wooden fabrication table (not recommended), a plan was made to create a custom chimney cap out of dimensional steel angle and tubing, expanded metal sheet, and 16ga sheet metal for the roof.
Tay, being a mechanical engineering college dropout, had to relearn some math to calculate the angles of the roof cap but we spare you the hours of head scratching, hooray! The cap had to be build based on measurements Michael supplied, which presents its own risks. Do Tay and Michael's tape measures get along? In there a difference in the interpretation of measurements?
After settling on the dimensions, Tay gets to building, knocking it out pretty quick. The final product weighs just under 200lbs, which is a bit heavier than most chimney caps but Tay was limited in the thickness (or thinness) of dimensional steel he could get from the local metal supplier on short notice. Once the cap was finished, Michael picked it up and brought it back to his shop where he painted it with automotive paint in his paint booth.
Once the paint was dry, it was time to install! This is where Wyatt came to the rescue with his crane truck services to make quick work of lifting the cap onto Michaels roof where we find out if it actually fits, stay tuned to find out!!
