These five stages are associated with different energies, times of day, seasons, and major organs of the body, such as :

fire: most expansive, highly activated energy, summertime, midday, heart/small intestine.
soil: gathering, condensing, downward moving energy, late summer, afternoon, spleen, pancreas, stomach
metal: fully consolidated, materialized energy, autumn, evening, lungs/large intestine
water: slowly dissolving, floating energy on the border between strong condensation and strong expansion, winter, night, kidneys, sex organs
tree: ascending, rapidly expanding energy, spring, morning, liver, gall bladder

💫 Yin/Yang
You can see that it is simply a more detailed consideration of Yin and Yang, with soil and metal energy representing the phase of contraction and water, tree and fire energy representing the phase of expansion. For example, late summer and autumn represent a more condensing time of the year, while the atmosphere expands overall from deep winter to summer.
