Charles Carroll was a member of one of America's great colonial families. His cousin, John Carroll, was the first Catholic bishop in the United States. At the time of his appointment in 1789 as the first bishop of Baltimore, there were only 30,000 Catholics and his diocese stretched across the whole of the young United States. By the time of his death in 1815, Baltimore was America's first archdiocese and the Catholic population was growing swiftly. History Professor at Catholic International University, Dr. Charles Rieper, joins to tell us more about John Carroll and why he became a priest. He takes us through how John Carroll became America's first Catholic bishop. Dr. Charles shares what kind of impact Catholicism had on the US and what Carroll's relationship was with George Washington.
