Here is a piano piece I cannot play, partly because my hands are not big enough, but mainly because I cannot play it at a true Galop speed, which is about crotchet = 152. (Neither can anyone else, except in the easier bits.) Liszt himself may have never played it; the manuscript has almost nothing in the way of articulations and dynamics, just the notes (not published until 1928). So here is my orchestration of it instead, which perhaps gives an indication of Liszt's intentions regarding tempo and character. The mallet instruments preserve much of the visual effect of cross-hands. Maybe a real orchestra will play it someday, it makes a brilliant showpiece. Still very difficult! Score and parts available from the Australian Music Centre.
