INTRODUCTION:
What is the Combined Medical Services (CMS) Exam?
The "Combined Medical Services" Examination or the CMS Exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for recruitment as Medical Officer in various Central government services like Railways, Ordnance Factories, Central Health Service and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The Notification for the examination is usually released in the month of April and examination is conducted once in a year in the month of July. Successful candidates are selected after an interview conducted by the UPSC for those having qualified the written examination.
ELIGILIBITY:
Candidates wishing to appear in this Medical Entrance Examination must possess an M.B.B.S. degree. Candidates who are yet to appear in the final examination of the M.B.B.S. may also be allowed to appear in the Examination provisionally.
Candidates who are yet to complete their compulsory internship are also eligible but their appointment upon selection is subject to their completing the internship.
AGE LIMIT:
Age far as age limits are concerned those candidates who wish to pursue this Medical Entrance Exam must be aged less than 32 years on 1st January of the year of Examination. Reservations as per governmental norms are applicable regarding age limits and job vacancies.
SYLLABUS:
There are two papers in the Combined Medical Services Examination:
In Paper 1 questions are asked from:
• General ability
• General medicine-including cardiology, neurology, Dermatology and Psychiatry and
• Paediatrics
In paper 2 questions are asked from:
• Surgery including ENT, Ophthalmology, traumatology, and Orthopedics
• Gynaecology and Obstetrics and
• Preventive social and Community medicine
Candidates who are shortlisted on the basis of the Written Examination are required to appear for an Interview.
EXAM PATTERN:
In a combined medical services exam there are two stages through which candidates have to pass.
STEP I is a written examination in which there are further 2 papers.
Paper I is of 250 marks having 120 questions in which
• General ability carries 30 questions
• General medicine-70 questions and
• Paediatrics-20 questions.
2 hours’ time is given to complete this paper
Paper-II is again of 250 marks having 120 questions in which Surgery, Gynecology, and Obstetrics, Preventive and Social medicine all carry 40 questions each. This paper has to be completed in 2 hours’ time.
STEP 2 is Personality Test /Interview: Candidates who are shortlisted on the basis of the Written Examination are required to appear for an Interview which carries maximum marks of 100.
Total Marks for the Entire test is (250+250+100= 600).
How to Apply for UPSC CMS Exam?
To apply for this exam, you can follow these steps:
• First of all, you have to visit the official exam portal of the UPSC i.e. www.upsconline.nic.in, there you will find out the link for application form named as ‘Combined Medical Services Examination Application Form’, click on it.
• After clicking, you will be directed to the application form of the examination, there you have to register yourself, you have to enter your basic details like candidate name, parents/guardian names, date of birth, postal address, valid and active mobile number & e-mail address, qualification background, etc. Fill out all the details carefully and correctly.
• Then you have to upload the scanned copies of your passport size photograph and running hand signature. Once you upload the photograph and signature then click on the submit button, before submission cross-checks all the details you entered.
• After that, you have to pay for the examination, you can pay by two modes; online and offline mode. In online or electronic mode, you can pay your application fee by using the Visa / Master / RuPay credit/debit card / net banking facility of State Bank of India (SBI). In offline mode, when you choose the ‘pay by cash’ mode, the system will generate the pay-in-slip called challan, this challan is payable at any branch of the SBI across the country.
REGISTRATION FEE:
The registration fee for this exam is Rs.200/- for general and OBC category candidates and there is no fee for SC/ST category candidates.
