US TO ARM ANBAR TRIBES
The White House clarified that the U.S. military won’t send special operations forces to accelerate the counteroffensive to retake Ramadi from ISIS. U.S. President Barack Obama is considering faster training and providing more arms to local Sunni tribes in Anbar instead. According to Al Jazeera Arabic, hours after the US statement, 17 Iraqi forces were killed in clashes with ISIS west of Ramadi. ISIS seized Ramadi on May 17th, causing 25,000 of its residents to flee.
POLICE KILL SOLDIER
Burundian police have shot dead a soldier during clashes with demonstrators on the streets of the capital Bujumbura. This comes amid high tensions between the two forces after nearly a month of anti-governmental demonstrations and a failed military coup. Meanwhile, Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza has delayed parliamentary elections that had been scheduled for May 26th by a week.
HIV CASES INCREASE
In the past five years, HIV cases have increased by 277 percent in the Philippines and are rising. There are now 21 new cases recorded daily. Stigma associated with the virus has caused many, particularly those within the gay community, to resist testing. NGOs, such as the Love Yourself campaign, in Manila have worked to organise mass HIV testing. The Philippine government has increased its budget for HIV prevention by 3.4 million dollars in 2016.
ILLEGAL FISHING ACCUSATIONS
Environmental group Greenpeace has accused Chinese companies of illegally fishing off the coast of West Africa and taking advantage of weak governance during the Ebola outbreak. A Greenpeace study quotes 114 illegal fishing cases in the past eight years. Greenpeace claims many of the boats do not have proper licences and fish in prohibited areas. According to the report, state owned China National Fisheries Corporation vessels are also involved.
