The gunman who police say shot and killed a UCLA professor before committing suicide is now linked to a Brooklyn Park woman's death. The woman, who neighbors identify as Ashley Hasti, 31, was on a "kill list" traced to 38-year old Mainak Sarkar, a doctoral student at UCLA who last lived in St. Paul.
Brooklyn Park police say Hasti was dead before the UCLA campus murder. Los Angeles police contacted Brooklyn Park to conduct a welfare check on Hasti at her home in the 2400 block of Pearson Parkway when her body was found.
"It's been several years since anything has happened in this neighborhood," said Jodelle Nygaarde, who lived near the victim. "We don't even have car crashes in this neighborhood."
Authorities could not release further details into Hasti's death and say it's a ongoing investigation.
"We are trying to coordinate our efforts between Minnesota and California," said Brooklyn Park Deputy Police Chief Mark Bruley.
Los Angeles police says Sarkar drove from Brooklyn Park to the UCLA campus to target two professors that were on a "kill list" traced to Sarkar. One of the professors was killed before Sarkar shot himself. Media outlets in Los Angeles report Sarkar had accused the professor, identified as 39-year-old William Klug, of stealing computer code and giving it to someone else. Sarkar received a master's degree from Stanford University and was a former engineering doctoral student at UCLA.
Hasti was a University of Minnesota Medical School student since 2012 and was scheduled to be enrolled there this summer. Channel 12 News also confirmed Hasti used to be a student at North Hennepin Community College in Brooklyn Park.
