When Sacramento, California, MC Mozzy was released from San Quentin in 2015, he made a conscious choice to focus solely on music and released four independent albums that earned him spots on both Complex and Rolling Stone lists. The following year, Mozzy released no less than 14 mixtapes. Two collaborative projects, with Blac Youngsta and Gunplay, followed earlier this year, and then in August, he released his latest effort, '1 Up Top Akh,' with features from Boosie, Dave East, and TDE's Jay Rock, through Empire Distribution.
"It teaches you a lot, being independent," Mozzy told us when he dropped by MASS APPEAL HQ to film our latest OPEN SPACE. "You go from being a rapper, to thinking more on a CEO type of hype, ya feel me?"
And Mozzy appreciates the learning curve. Having already banked on the web's worldwide distribution platform, Mozzy values his independence. He also values authenticity and integrity.
"It's about taking initiative," he says, of being a stand up guy. "Nigga doing life in the pen, and you looking out for his kids, looking out for his moms. You helping his babymomma with the rent and genuinely not trying to interact with her or nothing."
Then there's his hometown, Sacramento, where Mozzy sees himself playing a key role. "I just want to put my niggas on, and my niggas put they niggas on," he says. "I feel like that's my job title."
