SPOKANE, Wash. — More sellers are peddling fake gold and luring victims in Spokane right now.
One local pawn shop owner says scammers are getting smarter, and Spokane Police are warning the public to fall for the fake gold scam for your money and safety.
"They are everywhere," Dug Karlson, owner of Axels Pawn Tools & Gold in east Spokane, said. "They are going to Walmart and they are going to Costco's parking lots."
Karlson said last Friday, a customer brought in a gold bracelet and wanted to test it.
"When I tested that one, it came back positive," Karlson said.
Karlson says scammers are getting smarter, and it's more difficult for customers to tell whether it's real or not.
"We did have three people come in that day who have purchased and wanted to sell," Karlson said. " Shops on on the street, [they] had at least two or three people coming to their shop too.
Their customers were not the only group. One comment on Facebook says the scammer asked him to buy it because he needed money for gas.
It happened again at a gas station, this time, selling a fake gold ring.
Can you tell which ring is real gold? I sure can't tell the difference.
That's exactly what the pawn shop owner is warning you about. He says the first thing you may want to do is walk away from scammers before you pay for something like this.
Spokane Police say they are aware of this type of scam happening periodically in the area.
SPD says the scam happens at gas stations and grocery store parking lots. SPD wants the public to know this is a red flag and to leave the situation immediately.
"This is hitting some good people," Karlson said. "They think they are helping people, so these are good people who are victims, and it's just not right.
