The last week of 2023 saw giant surf smash the California coast. Many surfers flocked to Rincon, Santa Barbara’s famed pointbreak, which took the big swell and bent it into long righthand walls. Turns out, dolphins love long rights as much as surfers do, something Rincon regulars are familiar with. Spencer Fanticola, the surfer closest to the dolphins was visiting from Newport Beach, while Andrew Buck, on the surf mat, is a Rincon local.
“Honestly, at the time it seemed It was just another wave,” Buck said. “Dolphins often steal the show at Rincon. Surf here enough and you’ve seen them do what that video shows. I guess they appreciate pointbreaks as much as surfers do. Lastly, the massive amount of views for this wave when posted to Instagram suggests the masses appreciate seeing nature awe us way more than tubes, airs, hang tens, etc. And, these sights are regular -- so if you loved the video, put your phone down, go outside and walk and immerse yourself in nature.
