Gerard is a part-time farmer from Moycullen, Co. Galway. He farms twelve Belted Galloways on an 85-acre farm. He keeps a low stocking rate to promote nature on the farm. He is a passionate advocate of High Nature Value farming and has a variety of semi-natural habitats on the farm. These habitats include dry and wet meadows, regenerating woodland, an esker, and both raised and blanket bog. He also does not reseed his land and mows late in order to allow yellow rattle and other wildflowers to set seed. Gerard has recorded the rare Marsh Fritillary and Small White Orchid on the farm, along with pignut, wood sorrel, primrose and wild garlic in his woodland. Hare, badger, fox, pine marten and otter have also been spotted on the farm.Gerard is a founding member and current chair of the Belted Galloway Club of Ireland. He uses social media platforms to promote Galloways for conservation grazing and to increase awareness of farming for nature, and has had articles published in both the Farmer’s Journal and the Irish Wildlife Trust Magazine to raise the profile of Galloways and conservation farming.
