At least 36 people have died after a ferry capsized in the Philippines just minutes after leaving port on Thursday.
The MBCA Kim-Nirvana, a 27-metre-long motorized outrigger, departed Thursday afternoon from the port of Ormoc City headed for Camotes Island. The coast guard and police said 173 passengers and 16 crew members were on board, CNN reported.
The ferry capsized amid heavy waves and wind at around 12:12 p.m. about 100 metres from port, Reuters reported.
The Philippine coast guard has rescued as many as 118 people. They were taken to local hospitals around Ormoc. Twenty-one people are still missing.
The Red Cross was at the pier in Ormoc trying to help those who were rescued with blankets and meals.
Ferry accidents are common in the Philippines, an archipelago made up of more than 7,100 islands that is famous for its poor maritime safety record.
