STORYLINE:
Protesting university students briefly clashed with police Thursday during a demonstration against plans by Greece’s conservative government to allow privately-run universities to operate in the country.
Several thousand university students and their supporters marched through central Athens before clashing with police near Parliament. Police used tear gas on demonstrators who in turn used a fire extinguisher on police.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ center-right government is pushing several key pieces of legislation through early in the new year, taking advantage of a landslide re-election win in 2023, and a current huge lead in opinion polls.
It argues the measure would stop thousands of Greeks seeking studies abroad every year, and keep vital skills in the country.
But opponents say it would undermine public universities which are already facing funding difficulties.
The government has faced a series of protests by various professional groups in recent weeks, triggered by the legislative reforms and the cost-of-living crisis.
