4. SOUNDBITE (English) José Manuel Barroso, European Commission President:
"I want to have a very frank discussion with the Chinese president and the Chinese prime minister and others. If they want to give a real meaning to the partnership with Europe in economic terms, not only to sell to Europe but also to accept a bigger presence of Europe in partnership with the Chinese, also helping the development of this impressive country that is China, that we want as a very important and strategic partner. This is my message."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) José Manuel Barroso, European Commission President:
"We are working hard on our side to strengthen our rules in terms of arms sales. But we also think that to have a consensus in Europe, and we need a consensus in Europe on that issue, it is important to have a better atmosphere in what regards the perception in Europe about human rights issues here in China."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) José Manuel Barroso, European Commission President:
"On matters of intellectual property rights are they really enforcing the rules that they have decided? And we are very happy with some progress they have taken on that issue. So are they really opening the markets as we are opening the markets to Chinese imports? Are they opening the markets to our own exports? Those are the issues we believe important."

STORYLINE
European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso called on China on Thursday to open its market to more European products.
Speaking with reporters in Beijing on the first day of his visit, Barroso said improved market access for European products would help the development of a strategic partnership.
Barroso's four day visit to Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Macau is his first official visit to China and the fourth by a president of the European Commission.
He will meet China's president Hu Jintao, prime minister Wen Jiabao and Commerce Minister Bo Xilai during his stay in the Chinese capital.
Barroso defended Europe's decision to continue to impose an arms embargo on China, saying the EU needed to strengthen its rules governing arms sales while working to improve human rights in China.
He criticised China's human rights record saying no one should be jailed because of an opinion.
Barroso also called on China to enforce its intellectual property laws.
