Jesus lived in Nazareth, a village very close to Galilee. From Archaeology we learn that Nazareth at that time was made up of approximately 50 homes spread across 6 acres with perhaps 2-3 clans living in them. At the time of Jesus life, Judea (Israel) was a roman colony under the leadership of Herod. The main occupation was fishing and the social class of Jewish people living in Jesus’ time was fairly low .
The High priests and other priests religious and political leaders of the Jews at the time (Pharisees, Sadducees, The Scribes) were wealthy and pawns of the Romans. They oppressed the people, turning Gods Law ( the 10 Commandments ) into 613 laws (The Mosaic Law - it was their way of "helping" the people not to "sin" - miss Gods mark/ target standards) !!
Jesus did not come to destroy the law but to fulfil it, so all of Gods Laws remain, including the 10 Commandments, and in Jesus’ teachings we are encouraged to not only obey, but to be mindful of our social interactions, think about how our behaviour affects others and also of the great reward at the end.
