Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has called last week's unrest an "attempted coup". He has described the violence as "terrorism", saying it was coordinated by a single centre. While order has been restored, the hunt for perpetrators is ongoing. Authorities said foreign-trained Islamist radicals were among those who took part in the violence. At least 160 people are believed to have died in the anti-government demonstrations. The protests against a hike in fuel prices were initially peaceful, but later turned into the worst unrest in Kazakhstan's post-Soviet history.
