STORYLINE:
Dozens of activists gathered for a flash mob against gender violence on Wednesday in Rome.
A group of dancers performed on the iconic Spanish Steps in the Italian capital city on St. Valentine’s day to raise awareness on violence against women.
“There is a word that cannot be combined with the word love, that word is violence,” said Luisa Rizzitelli, from the Italian branch of 'One Billion Rising,’ an international movement born in 2013 on the initiative of playwright Eve Ensler, author of "The Vagina Monologues.”
“It's something that manages to bring everyone together, it's a symbolic date, we wanted to make it symbolic against violence against women,” she added.
The event was organized in various cities across Italy as well as other countries in the world by ‘One Billion Rising.'
Every year this campaign brings thousands of people together in over 100 squares around the world on Valentine's Day.
Other organizations took part in the event in Rome, among them the NGO ‘Differenza Donna’ (Italian for ‘Difference Woman’), and Amnesty International.
Rizzitelli says numbers are dramatic.
Since the beginning of this year, 15 women have already been killed in Italy, she told the Associated Press.
