Claudia Florindo, PhD
Speaker Biography:
Claudia graduated in Applied Chemistry, has a MSc in Human Molecular Biology, a PhD in Cell Biology, and two postdocs in Cell Biology. With more than 15 years' experience in research, Claudia has worked in several areas like cell biology, HIV studies, oncobiology, endocrinology and neurosciences. In 2010 Claudia joined Universidade do Algarve as a facility manager and three years after Claudia become the director of Advanced Light Microscopy Facility. In May 2019, Claudia joined Andor Technologies as a Product Specialist in the Microscopy Systems Division.
Julien Rességuier is a French scientist who studied cell biology and immunology at the University of Lyon in France. Following a brief work on oncolytic viruses at the University of McMaster (Canada), he completed his PhD in 2017 within the group of Bernard Verrier (CNRS) studying the behavior of safe-by-design therapeutic nanoparticles in vivo. At this time, he developed a scientific passion for both nanotechnology and fish immunology/histology. In 2018, he took up a postdoc position in the group of Gareth Griffiths in OSLO, Norway where he studies how therapeutic nanoparticles accumulate at sites of angiogenesis-related pathologies while also continuing his work on mucosal immunology using fish models.

High Resolution Imaging of Zebrafish at Nano and Millimeter Scale

Visualization is an important step to address complex biological questions in vivo. The imaging process can widen the perspective of analysis by putting molecular biology data into their biological and spatial contexts, including investigation of the dynamics of cell processes.
Recent years witnessed major improvements in imaging technologies mostly for in vitro analyses of cells; imaging in vivo lagged behind. Despite its prominence as a model, the mouse shows severe limitations for high-resolution imaging, especially when investigating fine object such as therapeutic nanoparticles and the cells with which they interact.
Recently, the zebrafish model has emerged as a powerful alternative model to investigate complex biological question in vivo, and this for mainly two reasons:
1) Its small size and transparency at the larvae stage provide excellent conditions for non-invasive live-imaging.
2) Its small size at both larvae and adult stage are also particularly suited for whole-organism investigations.
Together, these two crucial features secure an exceptional preservation of the biological context.
Here, I will present the advantages of the zebrafish model for high-resolution imaging and point out how it allowed us to identify a new biological mechanism impacting the fate of intravenously-injected nanoparticles, and to explore the organization of mucosal immunity in fish.
