Katskhi Pillar
The Katskhi Pillar, a magnificent limestone monolith towering 40 meters above the Katskhur River in the village of Katskhi, nestled in the heart of Imereti, not far from the town of Chiatura, commands our attention. Crowned by a church built between the 5th and 8th centuries, it exudes an aura of grandeur and mystery.
The earliest mention of the Katskhi Pillar and its chapel atop it can be found in the annals of Georgian prince Vakhushti Bagration, who marveled at the sight: "I beheld a rock in the gorge, so lofty and slender, resembling a pillar, adorned with a structure that defied ascent. Even I, with all my ponderings, cannot fathom how one could reach its lofty summit."
In ancient times, the local inhabitants held the Katskhi Pillar in reverence, considering it a powerful symbol of fertility. With the arrival of Christianity in Georgia, the pillar retained its sacred significance, drawing mortals who sought a connection with the divine. Atop the mountain, two small chapels were erected. One, dating back to the 5th century, was constructed using rough stones, with its apse intricately carved into the rock itself. The second church, built in the 6th century, stands as a testament to the skill and engineering prowess of its creators, constructed from meticulously chiseled blocks obtained from the base of the Pillar.
Located at the foot of the Katskhi Pillar lies the Monastery of St. Nino, an architectural marvel reminiscent of the ancient monastic enclaves precariously perched on the sheer cliffs of Meteora in Thessaly, Greece. These structures serve as enduring symbols of faith and the indomitable spirit of human devotion.
