We continue our Thanksgiving extended holiday weekend tribute to one our, and television fan's everywhere, all-time favorites, The Brady Bunch.
Robert Reed played Mike Brady on The Brady Bunch, and passed away in May of 1992. He had a long career before and after the series, but many may not be familiar with his work prior to playing his iconic and most famous role of his career as Mike Brady.
Reed was a professionally trained actor with an impressive resume when he came aboard The Brady Bunch in 1969, and his disagreements with certain aspects of the storyline and scripts are legendary (to learn more, check out Barry William's book, "Growing Up Brady". ) Reed and Sherwood and Lloyd Schwartz had their battles on set over storylines and scripts (Greg's hair turns green??), and the Schwartzs' book on the making of The Brady Bunch gives additional context (as does Barry Williams' book) as to how those disagreements came about.
Yet, for all of Reeds frustrations with the writing at times, his devotion to the cast members and their well-being is equally legendary and heartfelt. It is fun and amusing to see him struggle with the dance numbers on the 1976 Brady Bunch Variety Show, but he was a trouper, and wanted to be a part that show, even if he may have been a 'fish-out-of-water' on the song and dance numbers. He wanted to be there because Florence and the kids were on the show and he wanted to ensure they had his full support.
This Entertainment Tonight tribute for Robert Reed was broadcast on May 14, 1992 and includes cast memories of Mr. Reed and his kindness towards them and his professionalism with every project he undertook.
RIP Robert Reed.
