The emperor began the trip by visiting a site that has special meaning: Thames Barrier. The retractable flood control gates on the River Thames seemed a natural destination. Japan's emperor has long been interested in the waterway that runs through London. Naruhito studied 18th-century commerce on the river at the University of Oxford. He chronicled his interest in his memoir, together with his fondness for UK & its people. As a student in UK, the future emperor got to experience life outside the palace walls. His routine included doing his own ironing, going to the bank & taking part in pub crawls. UK's King Charles and Japan's Emperor Naruhito have known each other for years. Charles and Naruhito settled into the back of a carriage and chatted like old chums. Japan's Empress Masako wore a mask in her carriage because of a horse hair allergy. Analysts: Both nations look to each other as a source of stability & mutual reassurance.
