In this week’s Singapore Hawker Food, the SmallCityIsland duo was at Bedok Food Centre or affectionately known as Bedok Corner to find the winner Singapore halal food there. Bedok Food centre is known as Bedok Corner simply because the hawker centre is located at the corner of Bedok Road and Upper East Coast Road.

Bedok Corner is a place filled with many Halal Hawker Food. This amazing Hawker Centre is where you can find traditional local halal delicacies such as satay, ayam penyet, laksa, rojak, bubur kampong, sup kambing (mutton soup), chicken rice, char kway teow, banana and chempedak fritters, epok-epok, popular local dessert cheng teng, seafood like the local perennial favourites spicy sambal stingray or cumi sotong (squid) and many more.

Hawker stalls and hawker food we tried,

01 Masakan Anak Bujang: Nasi Kerabu

Masakan Anak Bujang serves nasi kerabu (blue rice with fried fish, vegetables and crackers) too. This specialty dish originating from the east coast states of Malaysia isn't commonly found in Singapore so this a true gem of a stall if you're looking to try this unique traditional dish.

02 Laksa Mana: Laksa Johor

LaksaMana specialises in a variety of laksa such as Laksa Singapura, Laksa Johor and Laksa Penang. Since Fazeera is a fan of Laksa Johor, she was not hesitating when she ordered her favourite traditional food from the hawker stall.


Soon Lee: Oyster Omelette

Soon Lee serves Singaporean and Chinese Hawker Food. They are MUIS Halal Certified and serves up a variety of delicious dishes such as Carrot Cake, Char Kway Teow and Fried Oyster Omelette. The food that Soon Lee sells does symbolises true Singapore Hawker Food.

What is a hawker?

A hawker in the Singapore context is someone who sells street food and now known as hawker food. In the old days, this was from a roadside stall or a pushcart. These days, hawkers can be found in coffee shops, hawker centres, and food courts (air-conditioned hawker centres). Hawkers usually specialise in a particular cuisine, sometimes in just one dish.

You can find hawker centres and food courts everywhere, including downtown whereas coffee shops tend to be located in the suburbs.
