Before explaining the difference between our Embedded and IoT courses, let us explain the architecture of IoT.
Internet-Of-Things (IoT) is a broader paradigm which tries to connect or integrate everything over the Internet. Architecturally it consists of 5 components, namely - IoT Device, IoT Gateway, Network, Cloud Platform and Applications. All these 5 components need to seamlessly work together in order to build an end-to-end IoT solution.
Let us take an example of a smart car parking system to explain these 5 components.
When you park your car, the tiny IoT device available in the parking bay detects the motion with the help of sensors. This information is further passed onto a nearby IoT gateway, which is relatively a system with more computing resources. Similarly, many IoT devices will communicate with the gateway via short range and low power protocols like Bluetooth.
Now, the gateway will further communicate with the IoT cloud platform via the TCP/IP based internet. We can use MQTT, a lightweight, publish-subscribe network protocol to transfer the data from the gateway to an IoT cloud platform . Similar to MQTT, there are protocols like COAP and HTTP which can be used for the same purpose. As you can see, the component 3 (network) comes into picture here.
The IoT cloud platform upon receiving large amounts of data from different gateways will process the data, say using machine learning algorithms. Finally, it may display them via a Web UI or mobile app, so that meaningful insights are derived and given to the user. In case of smart parking, it can display very simple information like occupancy and availability of parking lots.
Now, How do we develop this solution?
In order to build this end-to-end solution, different technologies need to work together. For example, to create an IoT device, you need to build a micro-controller based Embedded system consisting of sensors, actuators, interfacing, programming etc. Similarly, for IoT gateway, it will have edge computing applications that need to be developed running on an OS based system, such as Embedded Linux. Moving further to the IoT platform, it will have a scalable application which is built using Web services, Distributed computing, BI / Analytics and many more. Similarly, the Network and Applications will have their own technologies.
