Subcompact luxury crossovers are in a heated battle. The BMW X1, Volvo XC40, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, and now the 2019 Audi Q3 all provide a balance of practicality, handling, power, and fuel economy in their attempts to win shoppers. With a stylish design, impressive performance, and arguably the best technology in the segment, can the Q3 take the lead?
A 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 engine pairs with an 8-speed automatic transmission and Audi’s famous Quattro all-wheel-drive system to motivate the new Q3. 228 horsepower helps the Audi feel capable, but its 258 pound-feet of torque are what make the Q3 feel downright quick off the line. Fuel economy comes in at 19 mpg city, 27 highway, 22 combined.
Total cargo space remains unchanged from the 2018 model-year Q3 at 48 cubic feet. However, with the rear seats up, the trunk provides 23.7 cubic feet of space—a huge improvement over last year’s 16.7 cubes. Knee cutouts in the front seatbacks and scalloped roof panels help provide adequate space for rear-seat passengers, too.
Audi’s MMI touchscreen interface uses a single display in the Q3, rather than the dual-screen setup found in more expensive Audis. We prefer this design for its simplicity. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard equipment, and wireless Apple CarPlay is available.
