Welcome to this little unpopular opinion talk. I honestly can not understand (oh, I can intellectually follow the argumentation just fine, I just do not agree with the logic) why the idea that everyone should be tech-savvy stirs up so much controversy.
Sure, it's an ivory tower debate. But why can we not have them again? Cause that is decadent? My friends... the whole planet is decadent at this point, by the definition of that word. The old Rome was "decadent". You know what's worse than decadence? Redundancy, illiteracy and idioc(rac)y.
Not having everyday repair skills is idiocracy.
It just is.
If you can not repair your bike... you are an idiot.
You can't even see that something is wrong with your computer? Idiot.
It doesn't mean you need to be doing board-level repairs. But a basic understanding, that's primitive-level education. Same as knowing your lung-heart-physiology. Understanding that can actually save your life. Understanding a little bit of hardware can save you a lot of money. It is objectively a good thing to educate yourself and strive for more freedom as well.
So yeah: Go Linux!
Go freedom!
Go read a book. :)

Everyone should be tech-savvy.
