In this video I discuss the job of Fashion Photographer with Matt Beard. Born and raised in West Los Angeles, photographer/diretor Matt Beard has been creating images professionally for over 25 years.
Matt first picked up his parent's Canon film camera back in the late 1980s, and went on to study photography at Venice High School, and Santa Monica College. During his first years at college, he began working at photo labs and camera stores, to both financially support his education and to gain a deeper understanding of photography as a whole.
His first break came in 1992, when he started working as a freelance photographer's assistant part-time. This went on to become his full-time career for the next 10 years, and he was able to work with over 150 different photographers across the globe.
In 2006 Matt helped build and manage the P2 Photo Studio at Paris Photo Lab, and 2 years later he built his own studio (Studio 1444) on the corner of Sunset and Highland in Hollywood, CA. Although it was built during the 2008 recession, the studio was nonetheless a success, and it is still in operation today as WICK Studios LA.
Having sold the studio space in 2010, Matt went on to work as a full-time freelance professional photographer and director. Between 2010 and the present time, Matt has worked with a wide variety of clientele including Apple, Microsoft, GAP, Levis, Lucky Brand, True Religion, GameFly, VistaPrint, Buick, Ritz Carlton, Maroon 5, MGM Resorts, Ashley Furniture, American Airlines and many more.
Some of Matt's current corporate clients in 2022 include Disney, Cirque du Soleil, Legal Zoom, Henkel Beauty, GardaWorld, Mendocino Farms, Lunada Bay Swim, KNIX, Claire's, The Blue Man Group...as well as several music video projects and album cover projects.
Every project brings a new challenge and a new experience, and Matt enjoys every minute of it.
We talk about how he started out, originally interested in advertising and then moving onto photography as way to envision his marketing ideas. After studying photography at Santa Monica City College he found that his instructors were actually top notch, working photographers. This led to assisting jobs and eventually opening up his own business.
Matt shares with me his daily experience and what his work life really looks like. We also discuss how professionalism and learning good people skills helped him achieve the current success he enjoys.
I hope you enjoy the interview!
