Elevators! You likely take one at least once a day and never think much about it. However, that's a really old concept. The world’s first elevator was likely built in 236 BC as it was referenced in the works of the Roman architect Vitruvius, who reported that Archimedes had engineered such a structure.
Then, in 80 AD came the Colosseum that featured 25 elevators used for raising animals up to the floor. After that, the elevator was upgraded throughout the years to come to the comfortable versions we have today.
Indeed, in this day and age, elevators can be found in countless buildings but not all elevators are created equal; some elevators are true record-breaking marvels of engineering.
For instance, there’s the highest exterior elevator in Europe that goes up 502 feet (153 meters) in under a minute. It’s called the Hammetschwand Elevator and is located in Switzerland.
There’s also the Bailong Elevator in China that is the world’s tallest and fastest outdoor lift. Rising to the top of this 1,070-ft (326-m) long amazing structure takes a mere 90 seconds.
And that’s just a few of the impressive elevators we feature in our video. Watch the clip to see the rest of these record-breaking structures live and in action.
