Are subwoofers powered or passive speakers? Subwoofers can be either passive or powered/active.
So what's the difference between active and passive subwoofers? Just like with PA speakers, passive subwoofers need an external amplifier while powered subwoofers have an amplifier built-in. In either case, subwoofers do require some form of crossover which limits the frequencies that go to it. In a powered subwoofer, that’s already built-in. In a passive subwoofer sometimes you have to make that adjustment at the amplifier. In those cases, an active subwoofer might make more sense for your audio system because they require fewer connections and already have all of the internal processing built-in.
