The Enigma of Monty Clift's Demise; Unmasking Monty Clift's Demise: Seeking Answers to His Passing - How Did actor Montgomery Clift Die? On the evening of July 22, 1966, actor Montgomery Clift resided in his townhouse situated at 217 East 61st Street in New York City. Throughout the day, there had been limited communication between Clift and his private nurse and companion, Lorenzo James. Just before 1:00 a.m., James retired to his bedroom without exchanging any further words with Clift. When James woke up at 6:30 a.m. and attempted to awaken Clift, he discovered the bedroom door tightly shut and locked. Growing worried and unable to open it, James swiftly proceeded to the back garden. Using a ladder, he gained access through the bedroom window on the second floor. Inside, a distressing sight awaited him—Clift lay lifeless in bed, without clothing, still wearing his eyeglasses and with clenched fists by his side. James immediately utilized the bedroom telephone to contact Clift's physicians and the medical examiner's office, and an ambulance was called.Clift's body was transported approximately 2 miles to the city morgue located at 520 First Avenue, where an autopsy was conducted. The official autopsy report attributed his passing to a heart attack triggered by "occlusive coronary artery disease." No evidence was discovered to suggest any signs of foul play or suicide. It is widely believed that Clift's numerous health problems and eventual demise were intertwined with his battle against drug addiction. Alongside the lasting effects of dysentery and chronic colitis, the autopsy revealed an underactive thyroid. This condition, among other effects, lowers blood pressure, which could have caused Clift to appear intoxicated or drugged even when he was sober. Following a brief 15-minute funeral service at St. James' Church on Madison Avenue in Manhattan, attended by 150 guests including Lauren Bacall, Frank Sinatra, and Nancy Walker, Montgomery Clift was laid to rest in the Friends Quaker Cemetery at Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Elizabeth Taylor, who happened to be in Rome filming a movie at the time, did not attend Clift's funeral. Taylor had a close relationship with her co-star and described herself as 'broken' after his death. Their friendship expanded beyond the usual boundaries of Hollywood friendships, beginning during the production of "A Place in the Sun" in 1951.
