(8 Mar 2018) LIONEL RICHIE PUTS HIS HANDPRINTS DOWN IN HOLLYWOOD
Visitors to Hollywood can now say "Hello" to Lionel Richie's handprints in cement outside the famed Chinese Theatre.
The 68-year-old R&B-pop star was joined by his children, childhood friends, and Hollywood types like Samuel L. Jackson as he celebrated the occasion on Wednesday (7 MARCH).
"It's quite an amazing revelation, even to the point where it hasn't quite sunk in yet. The Holiday Inn used to be right here behind me. And when the Commodores first came to town, we stayed in the Holiday Inn. And my first destination of Hollywood was to come down and see the hands and feet. And now here we are 40-some odd years later. I'm now down here putting my hands and feet in this," Richie said after the ceremony.
"My classmates from preschool, elementary school, high school, college – they flew in. So they are sitting there in total amazement of wait a minute – here's the kid who couldn't play football, he was too slow to run track, he was too short to play basketball. And now he's doing what? You know, this is a surprise to them all the way around. And of course to have my family here – to actually see them marvel in dad's accomplishments -- it means a lot. Because you can't get your kids' attention but so many times. I've got a half a day, then I go back to being dad."
The "Dancing on the Ceiling" singer adds handprints in cement to a list of honors that includes four Grammys, an Oscar and a Golden Globe. He's sold more than 100 million albums overall after a career that began in the 1970s with the Commodores.
Jimmy Kimmel said he's been a fan ever since he was a teenager.
"Three days ago, I was inside the Dolby Theatre hosting the Academy Awards. Now I am standing out on the filthy street with dirty SpongeBob and crackhead Spider-Man, because I love a man named Lionel Richie," Kimmel said.
Richie said he used to put his handprints in fresh cement around Tuskegee, Alabama.
"Because I was the kid that grew up in Tuskeegee and every time they poured a sidewalk somewhere, I wanted to put my hands, feet, and my name in it. And every time I go back to Tuskegee, I realize they tore that sidewalk up. So this time, I know they will not tear this sidewalk up. My hands and feet will be here for quite a while," he said.
Richie serves as a judge alongside Katy Perry and Luke Bryan on the new version of "American Idol," which is premiering 11 March on ABC.
"I am addicted to exhaustion. And when I say that – I used to say that – that used to be my motto. After dealing with Luke and Katy, I might want to take a vacation. Because they are exhausting. But it's so much fun," Richie said.
"Instead of being hard on the contestants, we are like parents or should I say the university of 'American Idol.' We're now trying to really give them constructive advice, because we are the artists. We know what they are going to go through."
