The Caduceus and Rod of Asclepius symbols both come from Greek mythology. In Greek mythology, the Caduceus is the symbol of Hermes, the messenger god, whose Roman equivalent is Mercury. The Rod of Asclepius belongs to Asclepius, the Greco-Roman god of medicine. Of the two, the Rod of Asclepius is the original symbol of medicine, but it's often mistaken for the Caduceus because of the similarities between them.

The confusion began when both symbols were used interchangeably by various medical organizations such as the U.S. Army Medical Corps, who used it as a badge of neutrality, referencing the symbol used on ancient, noncombatant merchant ships. Today, most medical organizations favour the use of the Rod of Asclepius, but some continue to use the Caduceus as a medical symbol.
