In a dramatic turn of events, Emmanuel Macron announced France’s snap election on 9 June after Marine Le Pen’s Right Wing National Rally (RN) party won a huge majority in the EU Elections. The French people clearly recognized the importance of this election, with turnout by late afternoon reaching 59.39 per cent, the highest at this stage since the 1980s.
Results
France’s Interior Ministry released its percentages for the first round of voting. The RN and its allies reached 33 per cent of the national popular vote, while the leftwing New Popular Front came in second with 28 per cent. President Macron’s centrist bloc had 20 per cent. The second round of voting is scheduled for next Sunday, July 7. If the hard-Right party can achieve an absolute 289-seat majority, it would force Mr. Macron into an awkward power-sharing arrangement known as “cohabitation,” where two opposing parties govern together.
