"Cola" by Arlo Parks
Curated by: Maddie Swarr

Genre: #electrosoul
Arlo Parks probably isn’t a name you recognize -- well, at least not yet. Released just a year ago, “Cola” is the self-described poet/singer’s debut song, and what an introduction it is.
A confessional about the complex feelings towards a lover caught cheating, each transition between verse and chorus is a vacillation between ambivalence and apathy. She reminisces on their relationship through a series of sweet vignettes while proceeding to dismiss any and all feelings ever had for him. Her feathery, self-harmonizations tread skillfully between consonance and dissonance, settling into a chorus that digs in deep over a beautifully numbing note progression -- “I swear I loved you to death, but now I don’t really care ‘cuz you’re running ‘round over there.” It’s in the repetition of that final phrase atop a harmony that peels away from the melody when all the contradictions and bitterness that come from broken trust are allowed to resolve into unwavering detachment. And it’s this moment, for me, that makes “Cola” stand out against the rest.
With only four releases out and just eighteen years to her name, Arlo has been accruing some well-deserved recognition over the past year since her debut single. When she reached 17, she shaved her head, figured out she was bisexual and produced/wrote an album’s worth of material. That album, “Super Sad Generation” (released last month), puts on full display the young Londoner’s supreme songwriting and singing abilities over a backdrop of laid-back R&B beats. The level of talent and emotional IQ she possesses exceed her age, and provide assurance that this will not be the last time we will be hearing her name.
