Disking is a technique used to improve the alignment of the permanent teeth. This procedure is recommended when it is assessed that a permanent tooth will not have sufficient room to position itself correctly. If such a case should occur, the dentist would probably suggest a panoramic x-ray, permitting the study of the location of the teeth to come. Then, impressions of the mouth will be taken so as to reproduce the jaw. This reproduction will allow a more extensive analysis called Moyer’s analysis to determine if the case is suitable for the suggested procedure. This analysis will equally give a good estimate of the results to be expected. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia and only takes a few minutes. The intervention is simple. It consists of thinning down one or several primary teeth by grinding down tiny slices on the sides. In this way, we aim to increase the available space in view of the eruption of the permanent teeth so as to avoid overlapping. Usually the grinding must be done in several steps. We must wait for the eruption to be almost complete before touching the next tooth. The grinding is done at the moment we estimate the next adult tooth to come out is almost ready to erupt. In this way, the teeth around the created space don’t have time to fill the gap, which is thus reserved for the next tooth to come out. This technique can, in certain cases, avoid the wearing of braces or orthodontic equipment.
