Q: I've read how everybody from jazz players to shredders like Yngwie Malmsteen use an arpeggio called the Diminished 7th. I always rely on your lessons for the best breakdowns of topics, and was surprised that you didn't have a lesson on the "Diminished 7th Arpeggio." Any possibility that you could make one? I'm sure lot's of guitar players would be grateful.

A: The Diminished 7th arpeggio is a very unique arpeggio in that it does not occur naturally within diatonic harmony. You might be wondering, if it isn't found by stacking 3rd intervals from the major scale, then where does this arpeggio come from? Well, as you may already know, the Minor tonality scales have three forms, and the form known of as Harmonic Minor is actually where we end up finding the Diminished 7th arpeggio and Dim. 7th chord when Harmonic Minor gets harmonized. The Harmonic Minor's seventh degree is the step which produces the Diminished 7th quality, and so, some of the harmonic principles of this scales' harmony should be studied when it comes time to fully understand the use of Diminished 7th... In this lesson, I'll be showing the fret-board patterns for Diminished 7th, and I'll also put the arpeggio to use in several melodic examples.
