‘War Room’ to Hunt Bombers
The government has announced it is now looking into security camera footage to track down who bombed the Erawan Hindu Shrine in the capital Bangkok. The government has also created a so-called ‘war room’ to co-ordinate the search.. At least 19 people were killed and many more injured in the explosion on Monday. The defence minister says that those responsible: "intended to destroy the economy and tourism, because the incident occurred in the heart of the tourism district". The Prime Minister has also called an emergency meeting with high-level government officials and military officers in charge of national security. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
‘All Sides May Have Committed War Crimes’
Amnesty International has published a report in which it says "all parties may have committed war crimes" during the fighting in Yemen. Amnesty accused the Saudi-led coalition of carrying out attacks on civilians. It made the same accusation against forces on the ground that either support or oppose the Houthi rebels. The humanitarian crisis has been described as ‘catastrophic’ by the UN. 20 million civilians - or 80% of the population - are in need of aid since the war began in March.
Rajapaksa Comeback?
Early election results show that the former leader Mahinda Rajapaksa has a narrow lead. His United People's Freedom Alliance has won 21 of the 225 seats. His rival and the current prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe leads the United National Party , which has secured 20 seats. In January, Rajapaksa was unseated in a controversial presidential election. He was Sri Lanka's leader for nine years but was criticised for abolishing a two-term limit to allow him to run again. A party must win at least 113 seats to form the government. Official results are set to be released later on Tuesday.
No Peace Deal for Kirr
The president of South Sudan, Salva Kiir has refused to sign a peace deal with his rival Riek Machar. The deal was proposed by regional leaders. He said the accord still requires more time. South Sudan, gained independence from Sudan in 2011. In December 2013, a political battle between Kiir and Machar - his deputy at the time - led to a civil war. Kirr has requested a two-week extension to go over the peace deal before returning to the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa to finalise the accord.
