Can you imagine living without clean drinking water - just living one day without clean water? Over 790 million people globally which is about 10% of our population do not have access to clean water according to the World Health Organization. This World Water Day, lets learn about the issue of clean water and how we can help make a difference.
For eternity, water has been called life. Even while looking for exoplanets with life, we look for water. We cannot live without this simple molecule. From the time we wake up, water is an integral part of our day – we brush our teeth, take a shower, drink water, and yet, most of us take water for granted and that includes me too. There are many places around the world which lack this basic necessity of clean water. These places lack water and sanitation management systems and water pollution. The lack of sanitation causes diseases like diarrhea, cholera, and dysentery which kill up to 1.2 billion people annually – most of them children below the age of 5.
Children, especially young girls in sub Saharan Africa can spend 4-5 hours EVERY SINGLE DAY walking barefoot just to acquire few buckets of unsanitary water. Yes, this means many do not go to school and families are less empowered when women are not educated. The issue of water access is a real gender issue as well. Access to clean water means education, income and health - especially for women and kids.
Here is a solution to contribute to real grassroots efforts. This is how people like myself living in developed countries can help people obtain access to clean drinking water and save lives. This video is NOT sponsored in any way by Charity Water. I made this simply because I think it is too important to miss.
Charity: water is a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries. The charity inspires giving and empowering others to fundraise for sustainable water solutions. Their local partners on the ground build and implement the projects whether it is a piped system, a BioSand Filter, or a system for harvesting rainwater.
Then, they prove every single project funded, using GPS coordinates, photos and stories from the field. The most unique aspect of this nonprofit is that 100% of donor funds go towards project implementation and they send stories of the people whose lives have changed because of your money! Charity Water even has an IMPACT dashboard for every donor. I am a member of their program called the Spring which is a monthly donation program and you choose the amount to donate.
