Asia's Cleanest Village is a docu-feature made in 2012 by EMMRC Kolkata's Moasunep Kichu on Mawlynnong village in the Meghalaya state of India. The village has been declared the cleanest in the whole continent first by National Geographic and then by UNESCO in early 2000s. It has since entered the tourist circuit as a must visit site for tourists travelling in and around Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya and a most famous Hill Station since the nineteenth century. This video is a story of what makes the village what it is. It would appear as though the residents of the village are not only careful about cleanliness but also literacy and order. It is a no small irony, however, that until the early 2000s there was no metalled road connecting the village to the capital city. Even today there is no high school or hospital here and people have to rely largely on local herbal medicines or undertake a 90 kilometer ride to Shillong. Is it going to to remain a mere tourist attraction or are we going to do something to learn from them how to keep our own spaces clean?
