Clippers Filipino Heritage Night was organized this year by Roslynn Alba Cobarrubias (mydiveo Co-Founder/MyxTV Host) and DJ E-Man of Power 106, who were contacted by fellow Power 106 radio DJ E-Rock by the Clippers marketing team after working with him on other projects with the San Francisco 49ers and Giants. Erock reached out to both longtime friends knowing Roslynn’s history producing high profile & community events for artists like Jay-Z, Rihanna, Kendrick & Miguel, as the former head of artist relations & events at MySpace.com and Power 106 music director DJ E-man who produces a weekly celebrity basketball game at various high-schools across LA and one large annual event at USC with artists like Chris Brown and Justin Bieber.
The special night's performances included Apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas featuring his artist, Jessica Reynoso that he met on The Voice Philippines alongside the Clipper Spirit dance team, highlighting Kyla Fajardo, the youngest and only Filipina on the team. Throughout the evening, DJ E-Rock and E-Man joined resident DJ Dense on the turntables for special dance cam moments that included music from Filipino artists like Bruno Mars, Black Eyed Peas & P-Lo.
Post Clippers Filipino Night Heritage game, Fil-Am stars joined winning fans who won the opportunity to play on the Staples Center court on either Team APL or Team E-Man. Players included actors/brothers Dante and Dion Basco, bay area artist P-Lo, Crooks & Castles Clothing Co-Founder Gee Crooks, KIIS FM 102.7 host Manny Streetz, choreographer/artist Brian Puspos, producer/artist August Rigo, Allen Palos of MyxTV and top nightlife promoters Anthony “Presents” Schlander and Myron “Marten” De Leon.
The teams played 4 10 minute quarters, a challenging experience running up and down a full professional court. DJ Eman’s team kicked off to a great start with a high lead of 13 to 5 in the first quarter but Apl’s team caught up in the 2nd quarter mostly due to leading scorer, Anthony “Presents” Schlander with 14 points 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Kobe Paras was also onsite to help coach and encourage team members like Allen Palos of MyxTV to score 8 points throughout the game.
DJ Eman’s team dominated the 3rd and 4th quarters with high scores from P-Lo, Gee Crooks and winning fans Nolan and John Robert De Ramos. Brian Puspos and Myron scored next highest after Anthony on Team APL but with the added help of Chris Resplandor, also another tall player who won the opportunity to play on the team through social media, DJ Eman’s team pounded away to a 60-33 victory.
Apl.de.ap pleased fans with a 2 point lay-up towards the end of the game. “The lay-up is the Filipino dunk,” said Dante Basco after the score. A fun game mixed with the top Filipino leaders in music, radio, nightlife, film and fashion with members of the community left the nostalgic night exciting to friends and families who watched, mostly in their commemorative T-shirts that came with a purchased ticket. Those that purchased a Filipino Heritage Night ticket were able to watch warm ups, attend the post games and a portion of the ticket sales is going to the Apl.de.ap Foundation.
Stay posted for future heritage night events.
