This is the final night of Queen's Crazy tour and their final show of the 1970's. This concert was not initially planned, as the tour was supposed to end on the 22nd, but Queen was added to the roster of bands organized by Paul McCartney and Kurt Waldheim to raise money for the people of Kampuchea. Queen were the first band to play in these series of concerts.
The band end the decade with a bang, with Mercury pulling out all of the stops and giving one of his best vocal performances of all time, masterfully matching and even sometimes eclipsing his record counterpart. Roger Taylor is an unsung hero of the night, as he puts all of his effort into this performance as if it were his last. Brian May, while still a force to be reckoned with, has an off-moment tonight, flubbing his solo for the band's at the time upcoming single Save Me. With a (mostly) tight band, and a Freddie Mercury at the top of his game, this is surely one of Queen's greatest shows of all time.
On this night, we say goodbye to If You Can't Beat Them, Don't Stop Me Now, Spread Your Wings, and '39. The latter two would be very rarely referenced in later years, but never fully played again.
This is sourced from the master tape of this audience recording which was released by Wardour in early 2020. The show is complete, although with a small tape flip after Save Me. This audience recording ran at a slow speed, so I adjusted it to be closer to the circulating video feed audio which is much more accurate to what was truly heard that night. While this is not a 100% accurate speed correction, it gives a much better general idea of what the band sounded like on the night.
