The Route of the Slaves is an oral story widely spread in Benin to tell about this tragic chapter in human history: the enslavement of people over three centuries in Africa and who were involuntarily displaced to other continents for forced labor. In Ouidah, Benin, there was one of the busiest slave markets in West Africa. Today, in knowledge of these terrible times, the Benin government with UNESCO have created monuments that mark the "Route of the Slaves".
In 2012 Cadu Cinelli went to Benin to artistically collaborate on projects developed by Compagnie du Sens Common, coordinated by Inno Sorsy (international director) Martine Macé and Nestor Vidanon (local directors). On this trip he got into contact with the countless historical and geographic connections between Brazil and Benin. Route of the Slaves was part of a project developed with groups of young boys at the Civil Prison of Porto Novo.
The video "Route of the Slaves" was recorded in August 2020 directly from artists' home: Cadu Cinelli (Curitiba - Brazil), Inno Sorsy (London - United Kingdom), Innocent Aniwanou (Porto Novo, Benin). The video was produced by Bilboquê Artistic and Cultural Creations, in co-production of Caleidoscópio Associação Cultural and production of the Tapetes Contadores de Histórias.
